HIILAWE FALLS, BIG ISLAND

"These are actually twin falls, of which the left side does not readily flow due to irrigation practices in the mauka fields. Hiilawe Falls is at the back of Waipio Valley on the North Shore of the Big Island of Hawaii. Waipio is a huge valley with a strong flow of water and an active population farming taro on the floor of the valley. Hiilawe has a history of being a spiritual area to Native Hawaiians. There are many legends related to Hiilawe, and musicians have written quite a few songs about this sacred spot. I did this painting as part of a collection of work after camping in the valley one summer. The original is 12x26 and in a private collection."
